Review: Shark Steam Mop

I absolutely loved this thing... for about a month. I have ceramic tile with all sorts of grooves that a swiffer mop just can't get. My floors were amazing! Then my dog got a bladder infection and started urinating all over the place. I thought it would be ok to use the steam mop because the microfiber cloths were machine washable. WRONG! Those cloths hold on to smells like you wouldn't believe. Every time I mopped afterwards the whole house would smell like urine.

The Product

  • Comes with 2 microfiber pads
  • Requires outlet
  • Tank is larger than other models
  • Swivels to reach difficult spots

The Good

  • Cleans textured tiles better than swiffer mop
  • Cleans great in general
  • Easier to use than mop and bucket

The Bad

  • Doesn't fit behind the average toilet
  • Soaks up bad smells and spreads them even after several washes
  • Other reviewers don't recommend the steam on hard wood

For the Spoonies

Mop and Bucket

For me, it costs 2 spoons per room I have to mop. I have 4 rooms that need mopping. That's 8 spoons gone for one task. You may have to add another spoon for filling and dragging around a bucket. For some people it may use more spoons. Yup that's almost a whole day of spoons gone.

Final count: 3 spoons per 1 room

Steam Mop

The steam mop has to be pumped in the beginning to get going. It's pretty exhausting and can easily take a spoon. The mop has to continually be pumped which happens with the typical back and forth motion. If you have to stop and take a break then you will have to use more spoons to get it going again. This means the steam mop can cost more spoons than a mop and bucket. For me, I have to take 2 breaks for the bathroom alone. That's 4 spoons. At one point in my illness I couldn't move the mop around and all. So if your arms are weak, this may not be realistic in the slightest.

Final count: 4 spoons per 1 room

Overall I do not recommend this product for spoonies. There is another product I use that I will get to next.
However, if you are of an able body, don't have to worry about funny smells, and don't have hardwood this product would be great for you.
